FRAUD ALERT!

Vishing Attack

We have received several phone calls from members stating that they were contacted by ABNB. An attacker is using caller ID spoofing, to set up a fake caller ID with ABNB’s phone number. Seeing the caller ID that is from ABNB and the caller sounds legitimate (social engineering), the member answers all the attacker’s questions, providing his bank account information, credit card information and possibly even user IDs and passwords to his/her account.  The attacker has just successfully completed a vishing attack on the member.

What is Vishing attack? Vishing is the criminal practice of using social engineering and *Voice over IP (VoIP) to gain access to personal information such as credit card numbers for use in identity theft schemes. The term is a combination of voice and phishing. **Spoofing – Is the art of stealing real phone number, DNS (Domain Name Services) or IP address and using it for tricking the victim to believe that the attacker belongs to legitimate network.

If you ever receive a call and you suspect that the call is fake, please ask the caller to identify himself and tell him/her kindly to hang up the phone. Try calling him/her back from the number that you saw on your caller ID. If the phone number was spoofed, when you call the real company you can validate with the company to see if someone called. In addition, you can always browse to that company’s website to find out the company's phone numbers from the “contact us” link.
